Things to Know Before Nursing School

Updated: Oct 28

Before you crack open that first textbook or step into your first clinical shift, take a breath with me. Nursing school is more than a checklist of exams and competencies, it’s a transformation. Of your mind, your heart, your spirit. It’s a becoming.

Whether you’re just starting the journey or you’ve been circling the idea for a while, I hope these words bring you empowerment and clarity, and a strong foundation to rise from. Here’s what I wish someone had whispered to me before I began…

1. Know why you’re doing it.

Your “why” will carry you through the tough days. Write it down. Come back to it often.

2. It’s not just about memorization, it’s about critical thinking.

You will be asked to think like a nurse, not just repeat facts. Be ready to stretch your mind and apply what you learn!

3. Time management will become your superpower.

Balancing lectures, clinicals, assignments, and life takes intentional scheduling. Learn to protect your time and your peace.

4. Clinicals will make or break your confidence, in the best ways of course.

Don’t worry if you feel unsure at first. Every confident nurse started out nervous. Just show up, ask questions, and stay open.

5. Self-care is essential, not optional.

Get sleep. Move your body. Eat nourishing foods. Cry when you need to. Say no when necessary. Keep your cup full.

6. Support is everything.

Whether it’s classmates, a study group, family, or an online space like The Nursing Well, don’t go through it alone.

7. It’s okay to not be perfect.

You’re learning to save lives, give yourself grace as you grow.

8. Nursing school is a season.

It may feel overwhelming at times, but remember, this is temporary. What you gain will last a lifetime.

9. Be open to what kind of nurse you might become.

You might go in thinking one specialty is for you and fall in love with something else. Let the experience guide you.

10. You’re more capable than you think.

Seriously. You wouldn’t feel this pull if you weren’t already equipped to walk the path.

So breathe. Soften your shoulders. Take one step at a time.

And know this: you are not alone.

The Nursing Well was created to walk with you, offer rest stops, and remind you of your magic when the road gets long. Whether you’re here for a season or staying for the full ride, I’m so glad you found your way here.
